Keynotes:

Dr Sa'diyya Shaikh, Department of Religious Studies at the University of Cape Town and Dr Nina Hoel, Department of Anthropology at the University of KwaZulu Natal

Amid a wealth of debate around ideas of the ordinary and intimate and reflecting on the notion of “theorizing experience” from a feminist standpoint, the conference will enable fruitful conversations between feminist scholars and scholars of gender and Islam. Presentations from critical scholars and creative writers in several fields will address the theorization of lived Islam in transnational settings and examine the ways in which experience is constituted through a situated politics of gender, race and sexuality.

The Theorizing Gender and Islam conference is free and open to the public, and we anticipate a rich set of discussions. We welcome broad attendance at the two evening keynote sessions at 7 p.m. in the Nittany Lion Inn Alumni Lounge. Please note that seating for the daytime sessions is limited. You are invited to register with Gabeba Baderoon, gxb26@psu.edu, if you plan to attend the daytime sessions.
