'Entering' the Sacred Page: The Medici and the Service Books of the Florentine Cathedral
The return of the Medici from exile in 1512 had a direct impact on the design and content of the choirbooks produced for the cathedral of Florence. Whether through depictions of the family’s most distinguished members – most notably Lorenzo il Magnifico and Pope Leo X – or whether through the creation of new liturgical texts and music, the lavish manuscripts reflect the themes of control and propaganda central to the years of the Medici restoration.
