Serap Erincin Performance Double Bill
Serap Erincin’s multimedia installations, theatrical performances, and scholarship focus on human rights, eco-criticism, digital media, and new technologies in experimental performance, among other topics. As part of the Boundaries program, she will share two performances she conceived and performs, at the State Theatre. Aesthetically and formally distinctive but thematically related, both pieces build upon the connection between personal and collective memories, the microcosm and the macrocosm, and the self and the society/planet.
The first play, Atrocity Boulevard, premiered as part of the 16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival program alongside prestigious works such as Human Writes by The Forsythe Company. The play is a meditation on the links between the cities of the world manifested through the stories of one’s body. In this play, Erincin blends the techniques of spoken word, poetry, interactive, and intermedia performance, building a conversation with the spectators from the moment they enter the performance space. The play seeks to create spaces of imagination and appeals to each sense during its 51 minutes.

The second piece, Suppression of Absence, is a brief, heavily-multimedia performance questioning what it means to be human. Erincin conceptualizes and investigates the relationship between the human body, looming changes in our environment, apocalyptic visions, and memory.
Serap Erincin is an artist-scholar originally from Istanbul, Turkey. She has performed and presented her work internationally in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America. She holds a Ph.D. in Performance Studies from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, is the winner of various awards and fellowships, and is currently a fellow at the Institute for the Arts and Humanities at Penn State and last year was appointed Assistant Professor of Performance Studies at LSU.
