Truth, Reconciliation and Apology: Canada, Australia, South Africa - An Assessment
This talk outlines the rhetorical and material consequences of national apologies for acts committed on
Aboriginal communities in Canada and Australia. It then goes on to assess the experiences of the South
African and Canadian TRCs from the perspectives of a variety of victim-survivors, individuals and communities.
I pay particular attention to the role of gender-based violence and sexual assault as strategies of
colonization and racial denigration. To conclude, I initiate a discussion about the opportunities and limits a
TRC-like process might have for addressing the US history of accumulation-by-dispossession involving
slavery and racism.
