Graduate Student Summer Residencies: Summer 2017
The Institute for the Arts and Humanities is pleased to sponsor a program of graduate student summer residencies. This program will provide up to four advanced students in the humanities with a $4,000 summer stipend and the use of an office in Ihlseng Cottage, enabling them to devote the 2017 summer session to work on their theses/dissertations. Students are required to be in residence at University Park for the duration of the grant period.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Monday, February 13, 2017
The following eligibility requirements apply:
a) students must be seeking a terminal degree in an arts or humanities program at Penn State (i.e., Master’s candidates on track toward the Ph.D. are not eligible);
b) proposed projects must be directly related to work on a degree-required thesis, dissertation or final creative project (e.g., a degree recital);
c) students must be in residence for the duration of the grant period;
d) students may not teach or hold full-time employment during the funded summer session;
e) students in the College of the Liberal Arts are eligible for this award as well as for the Dissertation Semester Release Fellowship; accepting one will not render an applicant ineligible for the other at any time. However, students who accept this award will not be eligible for the IAH Early Modern Scholar Fellowship, and students who accept an IAH Early modern Scholar Fellowship will not be eligible for this residency.
Students are eligible to apply at any point in their studies, though a strong preference will be given to students nearing the completion of their terminal degree. Proposals that are interdisciplinary in outlook, methodology, media, or scope are especially welcome. Students with projects in the social sciences are eligible to apply if their projects have important implications for the arts and/or humanities. Students on Federal aid should be advised that their Federal package might be affected by the stipend award.
FINAL REPORT AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS:
Grant recipients will be asked to submit a report on their project no later than thirty days after the end of the residency period. In addition, recipients will be expected to enter the Graduate Exhibition in the Spring following their residencies (for more information, visit http://www.gradsch.psu.edu/exhibition/). Appropriate acknowledgment of the Institute’s support must be given in all theses, dissertations, performances, exhibitions, publications, and other activities related to the residency project.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE AND REQUIREMENTS:
Please use the submission form below to submit your materials. All applications must include the following:
1) Cover page with applicant’s name, department/program, degree sought (M.A., M.F.A., Ph.D., etc.), contact information (including campus address), project title, and expected date of defense (for Ph.D. candidates) and graduation
2) Description of and rationale for the project and a timetable for completion (not to exceed four pages, double-spaced, 12 pt. font)
3) Curriculum vitae (limit to three pages).
4) Letter of recommendation from the student’s project advisor or director
Proposals will be evaluated and recommendations made to the Director by members of the Institute’s Advisory Board. Awards will be announced by mid-March 2017.

Item 4 is to be uploaded separately by the applicant's advisor or director. Applicants are responsible for directing the appropriate individuals to the submission form.
