Truth & Reconciliation

Racial tensions and structural inequalities between black and white Americans have recently– and repeatedly– been brought to the nation’s urgent attention. However, as Jelani Cobb wrote in the New Yorker in November 2014, these events have been “a punctuation to a long, profane sentence, one which has insulted a great many, and with damning frequency of late.” Over and again, these tragedies and outrages are demonstrations of a systemic, historical dismissal of the dignity of human life.

Racial barriers and injustices are of course not limited to questions of black and white; all harmful exchanges between persons of different race or ethnicity are cause for concern, especially but not exclusively those that end in violence or death. Yet we can find such misunderstandings embedded in every thread of the social fabric, in every aspect of our daily life experience. The end results may not always be clear to us; they may instead be relegated to the subconscious or to underground or unacknowledged activity, even to the seemingly innocuous jokes that begin “I know this may not be PC, but....” But all social encounters in which one group of human beings belittles, stigmatizes or dehumanizes another group provoke the inescapable question: what does it mean to be human, and what does it mean to honor human life?

At the Institute for the Arts and Humanities, we believe it is our mission to ask what it means to be human– and we believe that the terrain of the arts and humanities provides a crucial ground for exploring questions of racial relationships. In 2015-2017, the IAH will embark on a new programming series entitled Truth and Reconciliation, with the aim of exposing and addressing inequalities, injustices, and reparations through the examination of historical and persistent realities of race in the United States.
